Private Company Assessments

Language Assessments For Private Companies

Since Alberta has been experiencing a labour shortage for the past several years, many businesses have applied to the provincial government to bring in foreign workers under the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program.  The Alberta government operates this program in partnership with the federal government of Canada and Alberta businesses.  Once a business/company obtains a labour-market opinion, it may employ a foreign worker recruiter and/or representative or contract with a recruiting company to travel to other countries around the world to recruit workers to its plant in Canada.

The Southern Alberta Language Assessment Services company has been involved with many  companies in their efforts to assess and provide language training for their foreign workers.

Maple Leaf Pork—SALAS Ltd. has been working with Maple Leaf Pork since September 2006, providing assessments on three occasions to date, once at the Maple Leaf plant and twice at Lethbridge Centre.  More than 100 employees have been assessed.  SALAS Ltd. provides the assessment, Lethbridge College provides the subsequent language classes, and Lethbridge Family Services—Immigrant Services provides additional community integration services.  Maple Leaf Pork funds all three of these activities in an attempt to maximize the comfort level and productivity of its employees.  Employees in the food processing industry need to meet the benchmarks of reading, 4; speaking, 4; listening, 4; and writing, 2.

Actyl Ltd—-SALAS Ltd. worked with this recruiting company to provide language assessments for 168 employees in Calgary and Red Deer in July and August 2008. These employees were required to meet the established semi-skilled worker benchmarks of 4's in all skill areas (Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening)
